And we should also probably mention the fact that the newest addition to the Bad Boys canon happens to be completely bats. insane. Set in what seems to be real-time so around 17 years since the last Bad Boys film and 25 since the original, we find the titular duo, Mike Lowrey (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) at a crossroads in their lives. Mike wants to keep on doing what they do best. indiscriminately killing criminals in inventive fashions whilst driving fast cars. but Marcus is ready to settle down as he's just become a grandfather. But when a figurative ghost from Mike's past makes a horrific and violent return, the pair are forced to weigh up what really matters to them and what they'll do to protect it. It's hard to get too far into the story without revealing some of Bad Boys' strangest secrets. and boy does it have those. but stylistically directors Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi do a great job paying homage to the bonkers of Bay whilst updating the look of the film so it doesn't seem dated when sitting alongside the Hobbs & Shaws of the contemporary action landscape. Speaking of which, Bad Boys for Life definitely feels like it took some tips from the Fast and Furious spin-off when it comes to pushing the boat out with some of its stranger action sequences and set-pieces. Whilst it never quite reaches those heights it's an ambitious attempt to meld over-the-top superhero-inspired action with the more classic R-rated violence and comedy that the Bad Boys franchise is known for. Lawrence and Smith are clearly having a lot of fun here with the latter trying to recapture his youth and avoid the realities of growing up and the former just wanting to finally take some time off. In 2020 there's definitely an aspect of Bad Boys that play differently as these films arguably glamorize police violence and in the newest entry militarized policing. Bad Boys for Life does try to reckon with that a little, attempting to speak to the idea of pacifism and coming to terms with your past, but ultimately what really saves the film from any deep critical breakdown is its own commitment to being completely and utterly ridiculous. We kid you not, by the end of this movie you'll likely be wondering if the whole thing takes place in a John Wick-style alternate universe. And who knows, maybe it does? Whatever the case, there's an almost impressive amount of WTF moments that had this reviewer's theater in a mix of hysterics and total shock. Bad Boys for Life is, at its core, doing what any studio movie does these days: setting up a potential new franchise. Let's call it Bad Boys: The New Class. These new members are mostly made up of a militarized police force known as AMMO which is staffed exclusively by inexplicably good looking ex-teen actors. High School Musical's Vanessa Hudgens takes on the weapons expert role, Riverdale's Charles Melton is the sassy muscle, and The Hunger Games' Alexander Ludwig rounds out the newbies as a tech genius with a tragic past. Unlike most films trying to introduce new legacy characters, though, Bad Boys for Life does it relatively well. Hudgens and co. are charming and their ongoing dynamic with the reluctant elders is a fun one. Whilst the core cast is solid the standout here is Jacob Scipio's antagonist Armando Armas who thanks to brilliant stunts and great action direction has some truly stunning and violent moments. It helps that Scipio is a talented actor who has one of the most fully fleshed-out character arcs in the film. He's also at the center of Bad Boy For Life's most surreal subplot which makes him one of the most entertaining and empathetic characters. After all, he is seeking revenge on two murderous cops who kill dozens of people on a regular basis. Whilst visually impressive. if you like fast cars, well-cut suits, and impeccably shot action. and filled with an entertaining cast, Bad Boys for Life flails slightly when it comes to pacing, narrative, and anything that exists below the very shiny surface. Basically, if you're prepared for the silly, savage, and sometimes completely unbelievable R-rated action that Bad Boys for Life has to offer than you'll likely be glad you took the ride along. It works to build out the existing world of the franchise whilst delivering fan service moments, classic character callbacks, and a chance for Lawrence and Smith to ride again. For filmgoers who aren't prepared for the action assault from all sides, it might not be the movie for you, especially when it hits its wild stride in the third act and completely commits to all-out war. Though it probably won't be the last time that the Bad Boys ride it would be a totally acceptable send-off to an action franchise that is still flying the flag for the old days of bombastic blockbuster fare. Verdict If you've missed big, bombastic, bloody action movies shot with style that lean into their R-rating and rely on cast chemistry rather than solid story then you'll probably love Bad Boys For Life. If not, you might still have a blast as this is certainly a nonstop ultra-violence extravaganza. But there is also the chance you might come out of the film with a little bit of all-out-action fatigue.

Martin looks 4'0 tall and 400 pounds #fatface. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reprise their roles as a duo of Miami detectives for a third chapter in the series, this time sans Michael Bay. The first thing you notice in  Bad Boys for Life,  the third entry in what can now accurately be called a series, is that Will Smith has not aged one iota since he appeared in the first installment 25 years ago. The second and rather more remarkable surprise is that this new installment directed by two virtually unknown Belgians, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, is decisively the best of the trio; it actually has a heart, or what passes for one in a gigantic, slam-bang industrial enterprise like this. Michael Bay is not missed. In all events, this quite gigantic crowd-pleaser looks to be the first big hit of the new year and decade. Its been 17 years since  Bad Boys II  arrived in notably overstuffed, 147-minute condition, and there never seemed to be a huge groundswell of demand for, or particular expectation of, another chapter in this franchise centered on two Miami cops, no matter how successful the first two entries may have been. Its also true that a substantial number of potential customers for this muscular, freshly decked-out feature were still in diapers, if that, when the massively successful first chapter initially appeared. Martin Lawrences Detective Marcus Burnett becomes a grandfather in the films opening minutes, and his mind is made up to retire from the force and gradually head into the sunset. By contrast, Smiths Detective Mike Lowry is still a player and cant possibly imagine slowing down for any reason; hes still in the game in every sense of the word. Their early banter about lifes changes or, for Mike, lack of same, establishes that the mens relationship of old is still firing on all cylinders. Still, neither of them has bargained for some mighty new firepower recently arrived from south of the border — and its personal. A new, savagely ruthless family criminal has just turned up from Mexico, one run by Isabel (Kate Del Castillo) who happens to have been an old flame of Mikes, with her son Armando (Jacob Scipio. There are some old scores to be settled, and the latter is happy to oblige. Its impressive and enjoyable to behold how easily Smith and Lawrence slide back into these characters and actually make them more accessible and fun to be around than before. Mike gives Marcus plenty of crap about riding off into the sunset while maintaining that hes “going to be running down criminals until Im a hundred. ” No sooner does he make that joke, however, than hes gunned down, taking three bullets in the chest. He barely survives, but once he recovers a bit the two men join together again, along with a unit of cohorts, to track down a savage killer who seems especially ruthless. At almost every stage in the script by newcomer Chris Bremner and veterans Peter Craig and Joe Carnahan, matters become more layered and complicated than they first appeared; older cops feel younger ones creeping up behind them, which simply adds to their anxiety, while the long arm of former intimacies ensnares them in maddeningly, even tragically vexing, dilemmas from which there can be no simple way out. But if all the main characters carry some heavy, even tragic burdens with them wherever they go, the writers also supply them with plenty of good times. Smith and Lawrence are as funny together as they ever were, the former giving the latter plenty of abuse about folding his tent so early until Marcus, in extremis, agrees to go into battle “one last time. ” The plotting could be criticized for one or two far-fetched storytelling coincidences and conveniences, but the thematic and emotional weight they bring to the proceedings validates their usefulness. The two directors roll with ease between raucous comedy and raw drama, to considerable effect, just as they crank up the tension on any number of occasions, occasionally with palpably visceral impact. The two clearly are in complete sync about where they want to go dramatically, how to get there and how to inject surprising amounts of humor into the rough stuff. Smith and Lawrence are in top form, and Joe Pantoliano delivers some fine moments as a wise-guy police captain, as does Paola Nuñez as a former flame of Mikes. The heaviness and sense of needless excess in Bays approach have been replaced here by a more fleet-footed and alert style thats all to the good. All the internal evidence here would suggest that this truly will be the final installment of this ridiculously successful short series. All the same, the door has been left open more than a crack for more.
